we love chai
We love it so much that we created a day to celebrate it.
So what exactly is chai? In many Asian countries, chai simply means ‘tea’, but chai is a tricky word. The meaning began to shift in the mid-20th century as India adopted British-style tea by adding milk and a sweetener. A little milk and sweetener turned into more milk and more sweetener. Spices were added to the mix, and a creamy new tea beverage was born - Masala chai.
Masala chai, which translates in Hindi to “mixed-spice tea,” is what we’ve come to know as chai. There’s no set recipe for it, but the spices traditionally include green cardamom, ginger, cloves, and peppercorns. Whether you like yours served hot, iced, or incorporated into a delicious dish, there’s no wrong way to enjoy chai.
